Professional Mourners By Alagu Subramaniam - A Note

Any writer makes his impressions of life relating to the period, that he or she belongs to. But if we are to consider any work of Art greatly, we should have some universal significance. So in other words, a work of Art should have an universal value and it should stand the test of time.

In this story the writer has use some cultural issues. I would say that they are rather out-dated and they do not interst the modern reader. As in many other stories writer deals with a conflicting situation. Here we see the main charactor who is 'trifle mad' faced with a big problem. So he becomes aggressive. But his behaviour shows his ignorance and arrogance, above all his inhumanity. Infact here we notice how man's inhumanity to man manifests. We see how inhumanly this man drags two proffsional mourners who are reluctant to come for their own mother has passed away.

Here we see the writer mirrors the socio - cultural background of marine ( fisher ) community. At the same time this community is dominated and steerd by another section with class distinctions. So this school master represents us the fudel society of the Antiont past. He treats the villages as his vassels. He called them 'stupid rascals' and low minded fellows. He would often scold at villagers and condem the women as 'wreched women'

The story is limited to a narrow area. In our sophisticated society we do not have this kind of lunatic. It does not mean that this is totaly divide of interest. It captures our interest but it lacks the reality.

P.S
This one is not written by me. It's a note my teacher gave in the class. I'll try to post some reviews written by me as I find the time.

I don't agree with this totaly. This story showcases how the system was in the past. It shows what people did to maintain their status, the class difference and caste difference which is there among specially Tamil people and the importance of money.

Can't you see the class difference among Sinhalese? You can. Take a newspaper and see marriage proposals. There you can get an understanding of the prevailing caste system. It works underhand. And the Topic itself highlights a system that was there. People were brought to cry for the sake of money in order to show their bogus respect and loss of the person who died.

    I have a lot in my mind...But i can't type..should you have any probs.. contact me..sampathjayakodydon@gmail.com
